System Centers of Excellence
The Peyton Anderson Health Education Center was completed and opened in 2001. It houses Administrative Offices, the Reginald Trice Conference Center with nine classrooms and an auditorium, the Learning Center, and Health Resources Center. The Health Resources Center Library is a fully functioning public medical library, one of only a few in the country. Materials in a wide variety of formats are represented in the collections, including reference, medical and professional, consumer health resources, children’s collections and a wide array of electronic resources.
The W. T. Anderson Health Center provides care for the under-served in our community from routine diagnosis to treatment in 17 subspecialty clinics. In-house laboratory services, x-ray and low-dose mammography and a pharmacy are provided. A computerized network provides physicians and residents on staff with up to date patient information.
Beginnings, coordinated through the Learning Center, helps new parents prepare even before their baby is born through a variety of childbirth and family education programs. Classes include breast-feeding for expectant moms, exercise, nutrition, birth preparation, and a special siblings class which helps future brothers and sisters adjust to the new arrival. Two lactation nurses are available to support new breastfeeding mothers.
The Cancer Life Center is fighting cancer with early detection, innovative treatment methods and advanced technology. An interdisciplinary team of skilled, dedicated cancer specialists work together to develop a personalized treatment plan for each patient. The Center provides comprehensive cancer care in an atmosphere of support and understanding for patients and their families. The Cancer Life Program offers patients access to cancer clinical trials and research. The current clinical trials are approved through the MCCG Institutional Review Board and available for patients who meet eligibility requirements. The Program currently follows 154 patients on clinical trials.
Care 24 is The Medical Center’s personal emergency response system, allowing seniors to remain in an independent living environment with the reassurance that help can be summoned at the push of a button on a monitoring device usually worn around the neck.
Carlyle Place was opened in September, 2001, as the only Continuing Care Retirement Community in Central Georgia. The staff is dedicated to wellness, prevention, and the highest possible quality of life for all residents. This beautiful community on 50 landscaped acres on Zebulon Road offers the best in retirement living with 212 independent living residences, 26 assisted living suites, 36 specialty care suites, and 40 nursing care rooms. Amenities include four dining venues, indoor pool, tennis courts, walking trails, fitness room, post office, beauty salon, a bank branch and more.
Central Georgia Breast Care Center, created by a joint effort of physicians and other healthcare professionals, offers mammography, clinical breast examination, breast health education, ultrasound guided biopsy, stereotactic biopsy, and genetic counseling and testing. When breast cancer is identified, a team of physicians and skilled nurses work with the patient to coordinate a comprehensive, multidisciplinary treatment plan. The mission of the Breast Care Center is to ensure breast cancer is detected at an earlier, more curable stage and to promote healthier lives for the women served. The mission is carried out by coordinating all services and compassionate care at one site to maintain and enhance good health.
Central Georgia Diagnostics provides laboratory and imaging services in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The laboratory component serves as a reference lab for over 300 physicians, nursing homes and hospitals within a 50 mile radius of Macon. In addition to the main campus, imaging services are provided at Central Georgia Diagnostics Center, a freestanding facility on Hardeman Avenue, offering a full array of Diagnostic services including Positron Emission Tomography (PET), a new procedure to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of oncology patients. Central Georgia Diagnostics Northwest on Zebulon Road offers mammography, bone densitometry and x-ray services. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) services are also provided via a joint venture with Radiology Associates.
Central Georgia Home Care Services and Central Georgia Home Health provide comprehensive patient care services and products. Services include Respiratory, Speech, Physical, and Occupational Therapy, Skilled Nursing, Home Infusion/IV Therapy, and Hospice Care. Home Medical Equipment includes oxygen, ventilators, nebulizers, aerosol medications, wheelchairs, hospital beds, ambulatory aids, diabetic supplies, bathroom safety equipment, apnea monitors, Wallaby Blankets, and more. Central Georgia Home Care Plus offers home care services such as sitters, homemakers and Certified Nursing Assistants. Products for active living can be purchased through The Company Store. These include diabetic supplies, bathroom safety items, breastfeeding supplies, and appearance enhancing accessories for post-mastectomy patients.
The Children’s Health Center provides primary care such as immunizations, well-child care, and hearing and vision screenings for children who do not have a private pediatrician. Approximately 14,000 children are seen each year.
The Children’s Hospital is the one hospital in Macon exclusively dedicated to the health of children. Specially trained staff representing 18 subspecialties provides high quality, high touch care for general pediatric, critically ill children in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and the Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery. Consisting of 98 beds, The Children’s Hospital serves all of South and Central Georgia. During 2003, The Children's Hospital completed a phased-in move to its new home in the former Middle Georgia Hospital. The Kohl’s Kids Safety Zone program at the Children's Hospital promotes education and community awareness with the goal of preventing accidents, the number one killer of children.
The Critical Care Center provides skilled medical care for the most serious of illnesses and injuries. It is equipped and staffed to provide minute-by-minute monitoring and care for trauma, cardiovascular surgery and neurosurgery patients.
Diabetes Healthways offers inpatient and outpatient programs and, because an estimated 50 percent of individuals with diabetes are unaware of their condition, is dedicated to increasing awareness of the disease through education, health assessments and screenings. Certified Diabetes Educators work with physicians to improve the lives of people with diabetes through state-of-the-art management techniques including insulin pump therapy. This diabetes self-management education program has received the prestigious “Recognition Award” from the American Diabetes Association in accordance with the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education Programs.
The Emergency Center is a designated trauma center offering a complete emergency service, 24 hour physician coverage, and 24 Hour Ambulance Service within an 85 mile radius. It is one of only 4 Level 1 Trauma Centers in the state, and the only one between Atlanta and Jacksonville. Patients come from more than 100 of Georgia’s 159 counties. The Emergency Medical Ambulance Service (EMS) covers a 1200 square mile area and is one of the busiest in the state with between 1700 and 2000 calls per month. Staffed by 75 EMS personnel utilizing 20 ambulances and 2 critical care transport units, 6 stations throughout the county provide an immediate response whenever needed. In addition, specialized Neonate and Pediatric Intensive Care Units (NICU & PICU) transport teams provide critical care transport of infants and children in Central and South Georgia.
The Family Birth Center enables women to experience labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum all in the warmth and comfort of their own private suite. Each of the 21 birthing suites includes amenities such as a conversion birthing bed, shower with Jacuzzi tub, bedside platform rocker, intimate sitting area and a sleeper sofa for Dad. Just outside each room is a private waiting area for family and friends. Through the Mother-Baby Care nursing program, the same nurse who cares for mother also cares for baby. Parents may choose to have their baby cared for in the nursery or have the baby stay with them in their private suite.
The Family Health Center has physicians available to serve families’ ongoing healthcare needs from routine physicals to diagnosis and treatment. A computerized network provides the physicians and residents on staff with up-to-date information on each family’s medical records.
The Georgia Neuro Center serves as the umbrella for the world class neurosciences services available through the Central Georgia Health System. Over the past year, clinicians and staff throughout the organization focused extensively on further strengthening stroke services. These efforts were rewarded in June 2008 when the Joint Commission designated MCCG as a nationally recognized Primary Stroke Center, awarding it the Gold Seal of Approval. HOPE (Hematology/Oncology Place of Excellence) in the Children's Hospital brings all facets of cancer treatment for children into one child-friendly, family-friendly center so that patients and families do not have to move from area to area within the hospital, but can remain in this warm, familiar environment, with a staff dedicated to making cancer treatment as comfortable and reassuring as possible for the patient and the family
HOSPICE of Central Georgia for nearly 25 years has provided comfort (palliative) care spanning the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of patients of all ages. The only not-for-profit hospice in Bibb County, Hospice of Central Georgia helps terminally ill patients live at home in comfort and dignity, by providing pain management, spiritual guidance, and assisting with insurance, financial, emotional, and personal care concerns. HOSPICE of Central Georgia also assists with obtaining and usually pays for, medical equipment, supplies, and medications related to the life limiting illness. Bereavement support is offered to anyone experiencing a loss, and services are provided regardless of the patient’s ability to pay. A special program, “A Child’s Heart,” is dedicated to assisting children through the bereavement journey.
JointWorks specializes in the interdisciplinary care of adults requiring orthopedic and reconstructive surgery. Nurses are trained to care for patients requiring delicate hand and shoulder reconstruction and replantation, in addition to caring for many types of fractures. Established in 1998, JointWorks provides comprehensive services to patients requiring total hip, knee or shoulder replacement. Patients are seen preoperatively and receive extensive, individualized education. Postoperatively, they are assigned to a dedicated patient care area and assisted in the recovery process. As part of JointWorks, free seminars are offered to educate the public regarding the importance of obtaining a correct diagnosis when experiencing joint pain.
The Albert Luce Jr. Heart Institute is the new technologically advanced home of the Georgia Heart Center, the fastest growing cardiac and endovascular center in the Southeast, and recognized in recent years as one of the top two Georgia hospitals in heart and vascular procedures. Named for Albert L. “Buddy” Luce Jr, retired Blue Bird Corporation President and CEO and former Georgia Heart Center patient, this new consolidated heart facility is designed to house all outpatient and diagnostic cardiac and vascular services under one roof. The Albert Luce Jr. Heart Institute features 13 procedure labs, 60 23-hour stay beds, 42 recovery rooms and 10 diagnostic testing rooms (for ultra-sound echo test, EKG treadmill stress tests and other less invasive procedures). Every decision is centered on the patient experience. In addition to the facility expansion, programmatic changes are being made to enhance the care processes for patients and family members.
MedCenters East, North, and Northwest operate 16 hours a day for the treatment of minor illnesses and injuries. Appointments are not necessary, and the locations around town facilitate convenient, affordable treatment.
The Pavilion is available to help people in times of need through inpatient care and the Partial Hospitalization program. The mission of the Pavilion is to provide personalized evaluation and treatment for adults and geriatric patients who have emotional problems and mental illness. This care is provided in a warm and therapeutic environment by a team of skilled professionals.
Pediatric Specialty Services is a service of the Children’s Health Center and The Children's Hospital. Two pediatric hematologists/oncologists diagnose and treat children with cancer and blood disorders. Office staff coordinates the healthcare needs of these children and their families through education, social support and nursing assistance.
The Surgery Center and Ambulatory Surgery Center are both equipped with today’s latest surgical technology, offering many advances in surgical techniques. Many operations which used to require a lengthy hospital stay can now be performed with just one day’s visit to the Ambulatory Surgery Center. Both The Surgery Center and Ambulatory Surgery Center utilize the very latest in minimally invasive surgery techniques. Using lasers and endoscopes, such surgery limits the disturbance of healthy tissue which means less pain and bleeding, quicker healing and shorter stays in the hospital or ambulatory setting.
The Medical Center is a Teaching Hospital, and proud of its identity and commitment as one of the largest teaching hospitals in Georgia. Programs are offered in surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, family medicine and internal medicine. The Medical Center is the primary teaching site for Mercer University School of Medicine, is affiliated with five schools of nursing, operates a school of radiology and is the only area hospital approved by the Accreditation Council for CME (ACCME), which conducts an extensive program of continuing medical education for Central Georgia physicians. The teaching faculty is available for consultation and ensures the hospital remains on the leading edge of medical knowledge and procedures.
The Wellness Center is dedicated to preventing illness through healthy life styles. A variety of fitness options including swimming, running or walking, aerobics, weight training, Stairmasters, basketball, volleyball and racquetball are offered, as well as a full array of classes in nutrition, complementary medicine and healthy behaviors. A trained staff is available to assist members in setting and achieving their wellness goals.
